Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is a lovely, quiet park in Northern Tanzania, most famous for its elephant migration, birding and authentic safari atmosphere with an exceptional concentration of game from July through to October and a fraction of the visitors found in other northern parks.  Elephants are the main attraction, with up to 3,000 in the park during the peak months, as well as good numbers of wildebeest and zebra as well as giraffe, buffalo, Thompson’s gazelle, greater and lesser kudu, eland, leopard and cheetah.

The real prizes in the park are dwarf mongoose, oryx and generuk – but viewings are very rare. Tarangire is one of Tanzania’s finest birding destinations.

Best time to visit Tarangire National Park

July to November is the best time for wildlife viewing in Tarangire National Park. This coincides more or less with the middle and end of the Dry season. Many animals migrate out of the park during the Wet season (November to May), when wildlife viewing is considerably less productive.

Peak Season (June–October): The absolute best time for wildlife viewing. The dry conditions force animals to gather around the Tarangire River, often attracting up to 250,000 mammals.
Best for Birdwatching (November–May): The wet season brings vibrant, lush landscapes and migratory birds, though wildlife is more dispersed and harder to spot.
Wildlife Viewing: Excellent, with high concentrations of elephants and baobab trees defining the landscape.

Travel Tips: The park is easily combined with Serengeti or Ngorongoro tours, and this period has lower malaria risks. For the most reliable, abundant, and iconic wildlife experiences, aiming for September or October is ideal as the dry season reaches its peak.
