Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park

Crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, the Amboseli National Parks is one of Kenya’s most popular parks. The name “Amboseli” comes from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust”, and it is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close. Nature lovers can explore five different habitats here ranging from the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli, wetlands with sulphur springs, the savannah and woodlands.  They can also visit the local Maasai community who live around the park and experience their authentic culture.

Best time to visit Amboseli National Park

Although Amboseli National Park can be visited at any time of year, it is best to go in the dry months (June to October and January to February). Kilimanjaro is often obscured by clouds, but the best chances for a clear panorama are always in the early morning and late afternoon. Views can be especially good during the Wet season (November to May), when the sky is clear of dust.

Key Seasonal Highlights:
  • Best Wildlife Viewing (June – Oct & Jan – Feb): Dry conditions force animals to congregate around permanent water sources, making sightings, especially of elephants and predators, very easy.
  • Best Views of Mt. Kilimanjaro (June – Oct): Dry weather clears the dust, providing the best chances for a clear view of the mountain, especially at dawn or dusk.
  • Birdwatching (November – May): The wet season turns the park lush and brings migratory bird species, offering excellent birding opportunities.
  • Avoid: April, May, and November are often the wettest months, potentially making road travel difficult.
